While Wifi Explorer only runs on a Mac computer it can diagnose wireless networks regardless of the operating system of the wireless client computers. Overall, I would recommend this software for troubleshooting issues with small to medium sized wireless networks. There is not currently a version available for the iPad, which is unfortunate, as the combination of the tablet’s portability and the software’s functionality would be ideal.

Wifi Explorer is available for Mac OS X 10.6 and later and can be purchased from the App Store. If you find that your active connection is not with the nearest access point then you can start you investigation there, for example. It allows you to see which of the wireless access points you are connected to as you move around the office space, which can lead to a better understanding of how the wireless clients are connecting to the wireless network. The software is especially useful when you have multiple wireless access points providing a network using a common name (SSID). If you are seeing a lot of background noise in the 2.4 GHz band, and all your wireless clients support 5 GHz communications then you might consider setting your wireless access point(s) to only use the 5 GHz range. There are many different consumer devices that use the 2.4 GHz band, and fewer that use the 5 GHz band. You will also want to consider the amount of background noise, which is indicated on the Network Details tab of the graph in Wifi Explorer. If the signal in an area is less than 50%, then you should consider getting additional wireless access point(s), or relocating the ones that you have in order to provide better coverage. In this way, you can measure the signal strength for your access point(s) to see whether there are any physical locations with consistently weak signals.

One method for using Wifi Explorer is to install it on a laptop and then travel around your office space. You’ll note from the graph, that adjacent channels overlap, hence the choice of channel 11 as one that does not overlap with the other networks on the graph. If “Home-D408” was my network, then I would consider moving it to channel 11. In the graph below the network “Home-D408” is overlapping with the other networks. In this case you can usually configure your wireless access point to use an open channel. However, sometimes you can find two wireless access points using the same channel which might lead to issues for the one with the weaker signal in a particular location. Most wireless access points will detect which channels are already in use by other nearby devices and try to choose an unused one. Wireless networks can use a range of channels. The graph shows the relative strength of each signal and the channel it uses. If you select the check box at the start of a row, then that network will show up in the graph at the bottom of the screen. The top part of the picture shows all the wireless networks the software detects. I’ll be referring to the details in that screen shot for the examples in this blog post. Below is a screen shot that shows some of the functionality of the product. When you need to troubleshoot issues with wireless networks, Wifi Explorer is a great tool to use.
